In this world there are a lot of people that drink alcohol. If you don’t drink alcohol you have at least seem it. Although there are some people that will drink and then drive. That why I’m going to be talking about DUI’s. There are a lot of people that have heard of a DUI, but they do not always know about the present laws, statistics, punishment, and avoiding them. So that’s why I’m going to take the time and let you know about those four main topics.
There are many present laws on DUIS, although they can be different depending on what state you are in. One of the main ones is that it is a crime to have your blood alcohol concentration or a proscribed level of 0.08 percent. If you get pulled over while you are driving under the influence you will be required to take a sobriety test (blood, breath or urine) to determine your BAC level. Although a breath testing machine may be easier to fault for accuracy than a blood test, but a breath testing machine cannot test for the presence of drugs. Although if you refuse to take the test or you are found to have a BAC over the state limit, chances are you’ll be taken into custody and brought to a police station where you’ll be held until someone picks you up, or until the next morning when you are sobered up. If this were to happen your license may be temporarily suspended and your vehicle may be impounded for a period of time after the incident. Generally, if you have any prior convictions of a DWI within the last 5-10 years, the punishment will become progressively severe, and these may also be mandatory minimum sentence. You may also have to participate in alcohol or drug treatment programs as part of a parole program, or you can have an ignition interlock device installed into your vehicle. There are so many punishments you can get by getting DUIs, although those are just some of the one I decided were important.
There are so many statistics on DUIs that you may not know of. Like that 71 people are killed each day in alcohol related accidents, or that one American life is lost every 20 minutes in and alcohol related auto crash. It is estimated that one out of every two Americans will be involved in an alcohol related accident in his or her lifetime. Every year there’s 708,000 people that are injured in alcohol related crashes, and 74,000 of those people will suffer a serious injury. There’s two million alcohol impaired driving collisions that occur each year. 80% of all fatal single car crashes are alcohol related. Over 65% of all fatal single car crashes are alcohol related. 36% of all adult pedestrian accidents involve an intoxicated pedestrian. Out of every 200 to 2,000 alcohol impaired drivers on the road there is only one that will get arrested. Therefore, the probability of you getting caught is pretty slim. Although out of those few people that do get caught, very few receive a serious penalty. Which some people may think that’s awesome. Although alcohol related crashes are the leading cause of death of young Americans, between the ages of 16 and 24 years old. For all Americas between the ages of 5 and 35 years of age, motor vehicle accidents are the number one cause of death. Those are just a few of the many statistics out there. (http://www.duipictures.com/statisti.htm)
There are so many different punishments that you can get if you get a DUI. Although the punishments will vary from depending on the state that you are in. In general, there are certain factors that can trigger additional punishment in a DUI or drunken driving case. These include having a child in the car while you are under the influence. If you’re spending above certain levels while under the influence. If your blood alcohol concentration or breath alcohol test is a.20% or greater. Also refusing to submit to a chemical test of blood, breath, or urine when you are suspected of having a DUI. If you get in an accident and you damage property or injure someone under the influence. If you are driving under the influence and your under 21 years of age at the time. Or is you have a prior conviction for a DUI, DWI, OUI, OWI, or any kind of related drunk driving offense. In many states, if someone is injured by a DUI driver, even if a passenger in the drunk driver's car, the case is considered a felony DUI / DWI. Also, if there is a death related to a DUI / DWI case, the drunk driver can be charged with vehicular manslaughter or even murder. So those are just a few of the punishment that you can get if you are caught while under the influence.
There are plenty of ways that w person can avoid driving under the influence. Such as designating a driver, while most people have heard this more then once, it’s still the simplest, cheapest way to avoid getting behind the wheel of a car after having a few drinks. You can also call a taxi to come get you if you had too much to drink. Most cities have some sort of service. Even If you drove your vehicle to the bar you can just go back the next day when you’re sobered up and go get your car. There’s always walking. Although that is only a good idea if you are close. Please remember that walking isn’t an option for everyone, if you are a couple miles of you home, it could be your best bet if you had one too many drinks. You just have to make sure you stay in well-lit areas and on well- traveled streets. It would be best to walk home with a friend if you need to pass through unsavory areas. There’s always the option of you staying where you are. If you plan on going over to a friend’s house for a party, consider packing an overnight bag just in case you are unable to drive home. Even if you weren’t planning on drinking too much to drive preparing ahead will make sure you don’t get a DUI. One of my final ways to avoid getting a DUI is to buy your own breathalyzer machine. Even though your personal machine may not be an exact match to a police officer’s, Is will help you get an idea of where your blood alcohol concentration is at. That will give you a starting point to base your decision on. Those are just a few of the ways that you can avoid getting a DUI. (http://www.ehow.com/how_2064486_avoid-dui.html)
As you can see there are many categories of a DUI. Such as the present laws, statistics, punishment, and how to avoid them. In my opinion I think it is a very unwise to be driving under the influence. So, even if you’re having a bad time or you just think that you will be able to drive home when you’re under the influence. Just remember that you can end up hurting someone that didn’t do anything wrong.

I liked how you organized you main points and your incorperation of evidence. I need you to proofreading, revising, and editing your paper. You are missing simple grammatical and mechanical errors. Check your paper before you post it! Your grade based on the rubric is:
ReplyDeleteSentence structures and word choices may be appropriate but are occasionally awkward; errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation may occur, but they do not interfere with reader understanding
Sensory details support main idea; figurative language used to create comparisons
Is consistently organized, although perhaps simplistically
Creates a main impression supported by sensory details
Format is missing he heading
total points: 79/100
bib 30/30
I think that you are right that whenever someone is drinking that they should not drive. That they should have a designated driver for sure so that they are a lot safer. You said that walking home was an option, but sometimes that could be bad too. A drunk person walking down the street could draw attention, and if you are drunk you might not want that. I do thik that a breathalyzer is a good idea, but seriously who do you know that really has one?
ReplyDeleteI liked your essay because it had a lot of facts in it, it wasn't just your opinions. A little more of your views could have been a good addition though. I noticed that you had a few spelling errors, but overall it was a good essay. The best part of your essay was your alternatives to driving, you did a good job of using practical suggestions. Great job, I enjoyed reading it.
